A lifesaver November 16, 2008 Meredith M. Huret This has been a wonderful purchase - we live very close to a heavily-traveled road and prior to buying this, we found our dog chasing squirrels into that road. Since then, our dog knows her boundaries (and figured them out almost immediately) and we have not had any such scares. Worth the price.
8 dogs at once and flawless !! October 26, 2008 D. Davis (central KY bluegrass) About to order another collar and noticed the unhappy comments. Thought another review might help someone. I started with 2 beagles (maximum wanderlust this duo), a German shephard, and mixed corgy/jack russell. I spent 3 to 6hr a week trying to recover my beagles and was frustrated to the point of almost giving them up before I bumped into the wireless collar system. My girlfriend is involved in a rescue group and so we have accumulated other dogs large and small. I keep adding collars to the system; currently up to 8 collars. The dogs learn their boundary limits quickly and it especially turned my beagles into "stay-at-home dogs". I am on a large farm with many horses and this keeps the dogs in check so they are not trying to make new friends with the horses, llamas or other livestock or more importantly not chasing them. Several points some mentioned in others reviews that I thought may have been part of the problem setting the system up. Keep the broadcast radio unit off the ground and put it about 3-4 ft up on a wall or table as the company recommends. That seems to keep the signal strength more uniform about the broadcast radius. I too noticed some idiosyncrasies with the broadcast boundary distances but I think it has more to do with the height off the ground the collar is held as you test it; the dog will have it at a consistent height. Some minor variance in boundary distance from large to small dogs may be due to their height difference but it doesn't amount to any significant differences dog-to-dog in the overall boundary distance. The batteries will run out quickly on a given individual dog during their 1st month and maybe their 2nd month because they "test" their limits; you might increase the correction level 1 notch (eg. level 2 to 3 or level 3 to 4) so they have a stronger dis-incentive to try that. Check your batteries on each dog weekly to make sure they have electricity; my dogs have been so conditioned that even if their battery is stone-cold dead they do not try to go past where they know their boundary is. After the dog learns his boundary the batteries will usually last a couple of months. The collar clip came unsnapped once on one of my beagles when rough-housing with one of the other dogs and I found it in the middle of the driveway when I returned home; the beagle was still in boundary sleeping in the sun. This system has been a Godsend keeping my dogs safe, off the roads, away from the livestock and yet free to be dogs playing in their own space. Hope this helps.
Very easy to use October 24, 2008 KC Girl (Kansas City, MO) Very easy to use and setup was quick. I originally had the Petsafe wired version and had trouble with the buried lines after just a few years of use. I like the idea of being able to take this one on trips and still keep my dog contained. My only complaint is the range is not as large as I had hoped. I have to keep the unit on the back wall of my house. Even then, the range does not extend the distance of my moderately sized yard.
My dog's a houdini! October 9, 2008 Norma J. Clark I have a 4 yr old spitz mix who weighs about 75 lbs and has been able to escape from just about anything! Hills and rocks on my 1 1/2 acres make a fence impossible. Besides, it would have to be 10ft tall! Annie is very intelligent and until recently has been a very good natured dog. I think always having to be on a chain or in a pen started to change her demeanor for the worse. Against all odds of having the wireless fence work (sloping landscape, metal in the house, etc. etc.) I decided out of desperation and sympathy for the dog to try the Petsafe wireless system. I finally found a place in the house where it would work properly and give me the signal. I set it for about a 70ft radius, put the flags up, turned the shock up to the highest level (due to her size and stubornness). I started the training (per instructions). After she got "corrected" twice, she wouldn't go out of the house for 3 days! I was just sick for what I thought I had done to my dog. But I kept working with her. It's been about 2 weeks now and all I can say is that it is just wonderful! She is able to go outside (free from the leash) and wander a big area. She will not go anywhere near the flags (even with distractions such as the golf cart (which she loves to follow) or other people or dogs. I now have the collar on "beep only". It is so great to give my dog the freedom she needs!! Wish I had done it sooner!!!Petsafe IF-300 Wireless Pet Containment System
Reliable, range could be better September 27, 2008 A. Dent (USA) There are 2 main components of this system: the transmitter and the dog collar. The transmitter emits a radio signal that's picked up by a receiver in the collar. Whenever your pet goes too far, the collar device first produces some warning sounds, then administers the dog an electric shock. The intensity can be controlled, on a scale of 1 to 6. You also get a bunch of flags that are supposed to be visual clues for the dog during training. I titled this review 'reliable' because we've had one of these transmitters for about 4-5 years and, after we plugged the transmitter in and set the range to the 'max', never had to revisit it. As for collars, we started with one, for one dog. We had to replace it after a couple of years because it stopped working. Since then, we bought 1 more because we have 2 dogs now. To make it short, on our 2 puppies, we had no need to study the manual, plant little flags or any other training clues. Our training lasted about 30 minutes. As soon as they got zapped a couple of times and learned to associate the warning tone with 'run toward the house', they were fully trained. End of story. My issue problem with this system is the range. Yes, I know, that I can buy 2 transmitters and therefore extend the range a bit but, at these prices, I can't afford to do this. All I wanted was to be able to extend the range from the current about 70-80 feet all around to maybe a 120 feet radius around the transmitter. Somehow, I think this should be quite possible. Oh, the new collars require the somewhat expensive but a lot easier to install PetSafe batteries. Buy them from Amazon if Amazon proper is selling them (no shipping charges on $25 orders) and you will be paying about half anyone else is charging - remember, everyone else is going to add shipping charges and maybe sell taxes.
