Album Description Finally, a Christmas album worth listening to all year long. When Mary Chapin Carpenter set out to create Come Darkness, Come Light, she took a far different approach to recording a holiday album than most artists do. Rather than simply lending her voice to time-worn Christmas standards, Mary Chapin wrote her own set of heartfelt songs which explore the many meanings and emotions that Christmas evokes in each of us. These songs, mixed with a few hand-picked gems from other writers and rarely heard traditional tunes, will speak directly to the hearts of all Mary Chapin Carpenter fans. These are not merely holiday songs, they are simply great Mary Chapin Carpenter songs, both warm and intimate. And while they artfully capture the spirit of the season, this is a rare Christmas album that doesn't feel like it needs to be kept on the shelf between New Year's and Thanksgiving. With stellar support from longtime musical partners Jon Carroll (piano) and co-producer John Jennings (guitars), Mary Chapin's voice goes down as warmly as hot cider on a cold winter's night.

Light into the Commercial Darkness January 9, 2009 THOM (Coastal Maine) This CD quickly rose to the top of our 'most played' seasonal music--a true antidote to some of the 'new' Christmas and holiday music that appears on the radio year after year. While I wouldn't typically have picked up a holiday album, this work from Mary Chapin Carpenter caught my ear on a local singer-songwriter broadcast. I was delighted with its unique blend of wisdom and perspective that one might come to expect from this artist. It will probably be a long time before I add another CD to my seasonal albums--but alongside George Winston's 'Linas and Lucy', this is the best yet!
Excellent January 9, 2009 T. H. Dove (Southern USA) This beautiful album got me through a hectic Christmas season. I recommend it to Mary Chapin Carpenter fans and fans of Christmas music in general.
Not as good as I hoped January 8, 2009 Carol Arnold (Tucson AZ) I heard MC-C interviewed on NPR and immediately sent the CD for Christmas gifts to friends, one to self. It was too mellow, each song sounding too much like the previous. I particularly liked Longest Night of the Year, however. Still, it was a welcome addition to our Christmas music.
A Comfort in the Dark or Light January 7, 2009 Will Barks (Kennewick, WA USA) Mary Chapin Carpenter's Come Darkness Come Light has beautifully simple arrangements of Christmas songs that are as gentle as snowflakes settling to earth. These collection of songs capture the soulful rhythms of a quiet and starlit winter's Christmas night. You'll never grow tired of listening to its peaceful message of promise and hope.
Something was missing January 7, 2009 Denise M. Smith (kansas city, missouri USA) Was really dissappointed with this CD. I played it once and did not have a desire to play again. I'm not a devoted fan of the artist, but was not thrilled with the selections or arrangements.
