Synopsis:

Will Ferrell stars in Semi-Pro, an outrageous comedy set in 1976 against the backdrop of the maverick ABA a fast-paced, wild and crazy basketball league that rivaled the NBA and made a name for itself with innovations like the three-point shot and slam dunk contest.Ferrell plays Jackie Moon, a one-hit wonder who used the profits from the success of his chart-topping song "Love Me Sexy" to achieve his dream of owning a basketball team. But Moons franchise, the Flint Michigan Tropics, is the worst team in the league and in danger of folding when the ABA announces its plans to merge with the NBA.If they want to survive, Jackie and the Tropics must now do the seemingly impossible WIN.

3 out of 5 stars Here comes the Alley... and there goes the Oop!   October 19, 2008

Short Attention Span Summary (SASS):

Time: The `70s

1. Will Ferrell plays Jackie Moon, a one hit wonder who owns, coaches and plays with his basketball team the Flint Tropics.
2. As you would expect, the team isn't doing very well
3. Down and out, but not giving up, Moon negotiates a chance for his team to join the NBA
4. Maybe white men can't jump, but he trades a major appliance for Ed Monnix (Woody Harrelson) anyway
5. Coffee Black (Andre Benjamin) finds his form and soon the team is no longer considered the "OutKast" of the ABA
6. Moon raises the entertainment level to include dancing seahorses and bear wresting at half time
7. After receiving some valuable advice from Patti Labelle, the team almost achieves the predictable.

This is typical Will Ferrell stuff - I'd rate it better than Step Brothers, but worse than Blades of Glory. Ferrell's over the top antics are the main reason for watching this movie, even though at times it's more like morbid fascination. Andre Benjamin is good, even though his impressive afro is even better, and Harrelson? He hasn't changed a bit.

Rent (don't buy) for the basketball, and stay for the half-time show.

Jackie Moon: Everybody panic! It's just like the Titanic but it's full of bears!

2 out of 5 stars The bottom of the Will Ferrell barrell   October 5, 2008

Semi Pro is far from Will Ferrell's finest work. He's funny enough that the movie still has several moments to make you laugh out loud, but other than that it's kind of boring. Almost not silly enough, if you can imagine Will Ferrell doing that!

3 out of 5 stars Defintely not the best Will Ferell but still hilarious   September 24, 2008

All you whiners giving this low ratings need to be quiet. This movie is clearly supposed to be stupid, not a smart witty comedy. It's classic Ferrell. While I do admit it isn't anywhere near as good as "Talladega Nights" or "Old School", it''s still full of good laughs. I don't see how anyone could watch this and not find it amusing. People these days are way too stuck up and expect too much when it comes to movies. I, personally, love comedies like this. They are supposed to be ridiculous and off-the-wall, and they make you feel good. If you don't like Will Ferrell, don't watch his movies. If you do like hi, then you should know what to expect.

Bottom line: an enjoyable, funny movie (thanks to Will Ferrell: a meaty 215pounds, your Tropics starting power forward - Jackie Mooooooon!). Perhaps better than the movie itself is its making - particularly the basketball camp where Coach Ellis puts the extras (sorry, "Ball Players") and actors through their paces (for three freakin months yo). Style is as important as form here. "I don't like his hair, cut him" Coach says. "Done". My favorite is the ball player who looks like a young Matthew Broderick but talks like Snoop Dogg ("me and my boys were out playing some street ball and this guy says yo! they're makin a movie over there, so I's like damn! yo da da da da da")......freeeeeeeky....

I am just about speechless at how a movie as inept as this one could even get made. Where was the script? Did these guys even have one? The movie should have been entitled, "Talented Actors Waste Time in Making Semi-Pro."

Supposedly, this movie is about a semi-pro team from Flint, Michigan, who played in the ABA(?). If they could finish in the top four of the league, they stood a chance of being absorbed when the NBA/ABA merged. There's only one problem: there WERE no semi-pro teams in the ABA and certainly not one from Flint, Michigan. And if you think the NBA will accept your team because you "average 2,500 fans a game," I've got a nice bridge in Brooklyn I'd like to sell you.

What's even more laughable is this is actually being referred to as a sports movie. PUH-LEEZE. There is more action in watching paint dry than there is happening in this movie. This basketball team performed more dance routines than ran plays. Yeah; that happens ALL the time in the NBA. Why I hear that Shaq and LeBron have just finished their interpretive dance classes. Woody Harrelson and Andre Benjamin's talents were totally wasted, and I've always been on the fence about Mr. Ferrell. Suffice it to say that I've now fallen on a definite side. The language didn't bother me--it was all the other dialogue that came before/after the language that did. Simply AWFUL.
