4 out of 5 stars Grab a Biscotti and Settle In   October 7, 2008

What's unique about this cozy mystery is that the mystery doesn't actually happen until the end of the book. You are first taken through the history and science of Coffee and there is also an interesting drive through New York beforehand, then Coyle throws in a body or two to keep Claire's life interesting and then of course she must help her husband and his best friend clear their names. No wonder Matteo refers to her as a nose-hound.

True coffee aficionados would never drink decaffeinated, but when Matteo's best friend Ric cultivates a new variety of naturally decaffeinated beans the world, and quite a few questionable people, are interested. What are the secrets behind these beans and why are people dying for it. Once again it's up to Claire to find out what is going on; that is, when she isn't trying to keep her daughter from dating a chef that is older then her father and keeping Detective Mike Quinn close enough to keep her warm.

I love this series. I'm usually a tea drinker, but when she gets talking about the aromas and the different subtleties in a brew I just can't help myself and have to head to our little coffee house and have a cup. I look forward to the next book in the series.

4 out of 5 stars Warm and Cozy   September 10, 2008

I liked this installment of the Coffeehouse Mysteries. The plot had me guessing throughout. The ending was a little haphazard, but the ride enjoyable all the same. I would've given this book a higher rating if it wasn't for the haphazard ending and awkward way Coyle has of inserting coffee trivia throughout the storytelling.

"Decaffeinated Corpse" is the 5th book in the Coffeehouse Mystery Series by Cleo Coyle. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book from start to finish, so much so, that I found it difficult to put down and do other things!!

What made this novel such a wonderful read is described below:

* Great Storyline That Grabs & Keeps Your Attention Throughout The Novel.
* Great Cast of Characters, Whom Are Well Developed By The Author. Plus Great Writing By Cleo Coyle.
* Lots of Red Herrings Throughout The Novel, That Keep One Guessing Who The Killer Is.
* Wonderful Dialogue Between Characters, Which Helps Move the Storyline Along & Gives The Reader More Insight Into Each Character.
* The Coffee History Written About In The Novel Was Also Fun To Read. Especially If You Are A Coffee Drinker/Lover. It Adds To The Coffee Theme Of Each Novel.
* I Also Love The Recipes That Are Placed At The End Of Every Novel.

3 out of 5 stars A decaf as good as the real deal?   May 25, 2008
Gayle Surrette (Brandywine, Maryland)
It's approaching Halloween and the events of Murder Most Frothy have had some consequences. There's tension between Clare and her daughter Joy. Otherwise, it's business as usual at the Village Blend, the coffeehouse Clare manages in the Greenwich Village. Matt, Clare's ex-husband and partner in the coffeehouse, has brokered a deal with an old friend, Federico Gostwick, to be the exclusive distributor's of his naturally decaffeinated coffee. Clare just needs to convince her baristas that this decaf, known as 'why bother' in the coffee world, is truly worth the bother since they'll be serving the new decaf at a coffee tasting for ICGE (International Coffee Growers Exhibition) at the Beckman Hotel. Of course, that's before Federico was found unconscious in the alley alongside the Blend by Clare who was also knocked out as she checked to see if the body had a pulse. Neither Matt nor Ric want to report the attack which leaves Clare wondering what's really going on.

Clare's learned a thing or three about recognizing a lie or a stretched truth -- and Matt and Ric aren't telling her everything. Det. Quinn is no slouch in picking up clues and Tucker already mentioned the mugging in the alley; so Quinn gives Clare a bit of advice to keep her out of trouble. However, Clare can't just ignore it as more and more it begins looking like Matt may have pulled them into something that could backfire on them all. Once the bodies start to pile up, even Matt has to agree something is wrong and maybe, just maybe, Clare might have a point, or even two.

The characters are becoming more finely drawn as the series continues and as backstory and emotional history are layered in with the plot. Ric and Matt were friends when Matt and Clare were married so a few flashback memories add to the texture of the story.

Previously, coffee has been only a side issue to the crime and investigation, in Decaffeinated Corpse it's all about the coffee: who buys it, who controls it, who develops it, and how soon it can come to market. Coyle manages to fill the reader in on the history and tangled commercial business of the coffee world, or at least enough to allow the reader to understand what is involved and how it could be seen as a deadly serious enterprise.

The series keeps getting better and better and you should try the recipe for Clare's Cappuccino Muffins -- perfect with a nice cup of coffee and a good book, preferable Decaffeinated Corpse.

A wonderfully frothy comedic mystery series with great characters and setting. Loved the puzzle in this entry (and the low-speed chase with Clare driving and Madame riding shotgun was hilarious). Looking forward to reading the next book in this entertaining series!
