Product Description Hard-edged, evocative, brilliantly paced, James Swain’s novels of crime and punishment in South Florida delve into a shadowy realm where criminals, victims, and cops share the same truths, the same lies, and sometimes even the same nightmares.
Abb Grimes is famous. Just ask the ghoulish tourists who flock to his former home to take photographs. Years ago, Grimes killed eighteen women, some never found. As the head of the Broward County Missing Persons Unit, Jack Carpenter was intimately involved in the Grimes case. Now, days away from execution, the notorious serial killer reaches out to ex-cop Carpenter with a surprising request.
Abb Grimes’ grandson was lured from his home. The cops are convinced the boy’s father–Abb’s troubled son, Jed–is behind the boy’s disappearance, but Jack’s not so sure. With a personal connection to the kidnapped child, Carpenter takes the case, and that’s when the situation goes from terrifying to fatal. There’s another gruesome murder, and once again the evidence points straight to Jed. Have the unspeakable sins of his father taken root within this troubled young man?
Carpenter races against time and a police department that wants his help but rejects his aggressive style as he searches through an underworld of predators, assembling the jagged pieces of a depraved puzzle, desperate to put an end to a murderous stalker’s blood-soaked rampage.
With unremitting action and skillfully polished prose, bestselling author James Swain has written his most riveting thriller yet, delving even deeper into the fascinating psyche of misbehaving crusader Jack Carpenter. A hero immersed in the evil that is his prey, Carpenter battles a stunning betrayal–and a horrendous danger no one saw coming.

Another hit for Swain December 1, 2008 Stephen T. Roberts (Lagrangeville, New York USA)
Jim Swain's second installment in the Jack Carpenter series is fast-paced, set up against a an execution deadline. A serial killer needs Jack to find his kidnapped grandson before he dies. The problem is the killer's own son is the most likely suspect for the kidnapping, and Jack is the only person who believes he isn't guilty. Jack only has his gut to go on as he calls in favors and battles the police department to save a child and make sure an innocent man isn't railroaded. Swain picks up where he left odd in Midnight Rambler, constructing a neat thriller that grabs you right from the start and doesn't let go. My wife grabbed this from me and finished it in one night .
Couldn't put this book down! November 29, 2008 Page Turner (GA USA) I have read all of James Swain's books and enjoy them all. I looked forward to having Night Stalker to read over the week of Thanksgiving, but finished it in two days. I look forward to his next book!
Never a Boring Moment November 25, 2008 John R. Linnell (New Gloucester, ME United States) James Swain seems to have hit his stride with his character of Jack Carpenter. Swain's original central character was Tony Valentine who used to figure out how the bad guys were skimming Las Vegas and I loved those books. Carpenter is into finding abducted children. It was a specialty he honed as head of the Broward County Missing Persons Unit. Although no longer with the police, he has lost none of his touch in this regard as people seek his assistance when loved ones go missing. His efforts to find a child in this instance opens many doors to other crimes and criminals and it would spoil the story to detail them here. My best advice is to strap it on and settle in for a bumpy and sometimes wild ride as Jack Carpenter "does his thing." No lesser light than Lee Child terms this a non-stop nail biter which pretty much sums it up for me.
The Night Stalker Gallops November 19, 2008 Jerry Hooten (Midwest) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Pack a lunch before you start this book. You won't want to put it down. Jim Swain has created a character you want to identify with. Jack Carpenter and his partner/dog Buster are relentless when they are on a case. Jack proves his skill as a missing person expert by solving other cases even while on his persistant search for the grandson of a convicted serial killer. Jim Swain knows his material. His depiction of law enforcement and missing children procedures is right on the mark. Get two of these books. One for yourself, and one to share.
Always A Great Read! November 4, 2008 R. Johnson (Nashua, New Hampshire) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
It's too bad that this author is not better known. I have read all his books and can't wait for the next one. He is not as well known as some of the other detective/mystery writers, but he puts out terrific reads. Don't miss this one, you won't be sorry to have read it.
